GENERAL SUMMARY: The International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society is a non-profit medical professional society of influential clinicians, scientists, and other healthcare professionals from around the world dedicated to improving the care of patients with movement disorders through education and research. Reporting to the Society Executive Director and working closely with the Society leadership and appropriate committees, the Director of Communications & Membership will set and guide the strategy for the society’s communications and membership activities to ensure that MDS is viewed as the premier membership organization dedicated to the movement disorders field.
The Director of Communication & Membership oversees and coordinates all staff functions of the Society’s communications & membership team and will work closely with a senior peer group of directors in the overall management of the Society. The role will include oversight of the Society’s publications and websites, media and public relations, activity-related promotion and audience generation, branding and design, corporate communications standards and the like, to consistently articulate the Society’s mission and key messaging. In addition, the director will serve as the key communications and membership partner on a variety of strategic initiatives aimed at effectively articulating our scientific leadership in the field and providing educational offerings and other resources to key audiences, including our membership, general public, potential donors, and collaborators.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES (Minimum 37.5 hours/week):
Develop and direct a marketing communications strategy that supports the mission and strategic objectives of MDS. This includes print, web, social media and mainstream media; and it is cross-functioned to internal and external audiences.
Develop and direct an overall membership recruitment and retention strategy that supports the mission and strategic objectives of MDS. This includes data management (member intelligence), member benefits, member engagement, conversion plans and measurable metrics.
Maintain editorial, graphic and branding standards for all MDS communications and events.
Oversee the editorial content, focus and advertising functions of the quarterly Moving Along, monthly eNewsletter and monthly Web site News.
Develop in-house marketing campaigns to promote MDS initiatives, programs and meetings.
Direct day-to-day content and visual elements of www.movementdisorders.org, and support the Website Medical Editor regarding editorial content of this website.
Edit/initiate MDS messages to members as requested by the President.
Oversee management of the MDS’ membership services area, including: membership recruitment, retention, and promotion of Fellow and Member benefits.
Provide oversight of the MDS Journals: Movement Disorders and Movement Disorders Clinical Practice in collaboration with the publisher, managing editors and editorial boards
Prepare communications and membership-related project proposals and budgets, assist in their approval process, and retain budgetary responsibility for their implementation and completion.
Work as part of the team of directors in the overall management of the association.
Provide direction and leadership to Communications and Membership Team members, monitoring interactions between individual members to ensure efficient use of resources and unity of effort.
Serve as a staff liaison to appropriate MDS committees including management of outputs
Stay updated on new technologies, best practices and industry trends within areas of responsibility
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in related field preferred
Requires outstanding organizational, time management, communication and accuracy skills
Prior experience working with volunteer-led organizations preferred
Previous association management experience and familiarity with nonprofit boards of directors a plus
Proficient in MS Office environment required and iMIS database experience preferred
A self-reliant, problem-solving, results-oriented individual who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical operations
Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal skills and the ability to work within a matrixed environment (with volunteer leaders, senior management and across departments)
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and timelines in a fast-paced environment
Ability to supervise staff effectively including appropriate coaching and mentoring
Travel of up to 3 weeks (including international travel) per year
Some evening and weekend work as needed
Occasional lifting, up to 50 pounds
