The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) was founded in 1971 and is the largest dental student organization in the United States. With a membership of more than 23,000, ASDA represents 86% of dental students from all 66 dental schools. ASDA’s mission is to protect and advance the rights, interests and welfare of dental students. The association introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, representation and advocacy. ASDA representatives vote in the ADA House of Delegates, sit on most ADA councils and commissions and comprise one of the most respected student organizations in the nation.
ASDA is located off Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, with a staff of 12and an operating budget of $4 million.
ASDA is growing and is adding a new position, Director of Business Development. The Director of Business Development will report to the Executive Director and will be responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s annual sales plan utilizing print, advertising, exhibit sales and other non-dues revenue initiatives. S/he will determine opportunities and set annual budgets. They will identify and develop new non-dues revenue opportunities and manage strategic partnerships to advance ASDA’s goals.
Represents ASDA to business partners and stakeholders to advance, position and sell the ASDA brand. Identify, solicit and cultivate relationships with partners and sponsors.
Develop and implement strategic sales marketing plans and forecasts in support of organizational strategies and objectives.
Direct implementation and execution of sales policies and practices.
Collaborate with Finance department to establish budget and forecast. Manage sales operating budget.
Direct sales forecasting activities and set performance goals accordingly.
Evaluate the effectiveness of sales, methods and costs and analyze results.
Maintain industry and competitor awareness and understand markets. Monitor industry activity to identify trends in sales and marketing activity.
Oversee marketing strategy and adjust to meet changing market conditions.
Recommend sales strategies for improvement based on research and analysis.
Develop and recommend positioning and pricing strategies to produce growth.
Design packages to build partnerships. Manage partner programs.
Set advertising sales revenue goals
Oversee relationships with advertising sales partners through regular communications to ensure sales efforts are aligned with ASDA’s mission and strategic plan.
Responsible for meeting and exceeding revenue goals for each program.
Identify and secure current and new opportunities for sponsorship.
Create integrated sales efforts/packages that increase total revenue.
Establish and cultivate a database of qualified sales prospects both in and outside of the association industry.
Provide monthly sales reports to Executive Director.
Oversee finalization of sponsor contracts and fulfillment with support from team members.
Oversee, negotiate and execute agreements with ASDA service providers requesting advertising, exhibit space and/or sponsor recognition.
Create and distribute fulfillment reports that demonstrate the key components and deliverables of the program in order to document the sponsor’s ROI.
Collaborate with marketing team to create promotional copy for print and electronic promotional materials.
Explore new member benefit relationships, maintain current relationships, and manage fulfillment.
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field.
Minimum ten years’ work experience in sales in association industry; sales management with healthcare association preferred.
Proven record of achievement in cultivating and managing multi-year partner agreements.
Demonstrated track record in revenue generation and growth.
Ability to identify new business and non-dues revenue opportunities for ASDA.
Superior written and verbal communication skills and ability to develop and nurture relationships with business partners.
Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Superior project management and negotiation skills.
Must be collaborative and work effectively with colleagues within the organization and with outside partners.
Acute attention to detail; adept problem-solver.
Some travel and weekend/overtime required.
Other responsibilities as required.
