Position Management: Reports directly to the Executive Director

Timeline: Completed applications received by August 1, 2022, will receive full consideration, but applications will be accepted until a candidate is identified. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date, however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The desired start date is September 12, 2022.

NSGIC exists to advance effective national coordination of geospatial information by supporting state-level cooperation.  NSGIC serves as a national forum for the development of future-oriented geospatial leadership. NSGIC’s influence in the nation’s geospatial industry is driven by committed volunteers who are leaders in State GIS programs working in concert with dedicated partners in other government agencies, not-for-profits, and the private sector. 

General Overview 

This is a full time position as Director, Grant Administration. The person in this position is expected to gain a thorough understanding of the organization’s business with a goal of overseeing grants that support NSGIC’s mission.   They must be an effective communicator, with strong writing skills and be responsible for the management of the grants.    

Description of Tasks 

The Director will be responsible for researching, identifying, facilitating, and implementing grant opportunities, particularly pursuing federal grants.  This position is responsible for grants development, evaluation, cost/benefit analyses and compliance, including research, pre-award grant writing, coordination of grant applications, and adherence to specific grant criteria and guidelines. 

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Prepares and implements grantmaking and writing to ensure adherence to workflow processes. 
  • Leads efforts to foster partnership development with similar organizations in pursuit of joint funding and/or other collaborative programming related to grant opportunities. 
  • Supports Work Groups by attending multiple meetings, and excellent organizational skills.  
  • Manages administration of the grant cycle from application to closing; ensuring that grant requirements are met, and payments are appropriate. 
  • Reviews applicant financial reports to perform due diligence procedures and identify potential concerns.
  • Assists and supports the Executive Director, Operations Manager and the Finance Committee in the fiscal budget and annual audit.
  • Ensures the management and financial responsibilities meet the legal and audit requirements.  
  • Understands IRS requirements for non-profit organizations and ensures compliance with rules and regulations.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or additional equivalent experience, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience related to grant development, grant opportunity searches, grant writing experience including federal, state, and private sources. Successful candidates will have the ability to work entrepreneurially and as part of a growing team. Must have experience with Google, Workspace and/or grant management software. Strong knowledge and understanding of financial statements with demonstrated proposal development and fiscal management skills are integral. Understanding of complex government funding opportunities and requirements, including sophisticated accounting, compliance, and reporting are also required. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

The Director, Grant Administration must be self-motivated and capable of independent work.  The position will work with Staff, Board of Directors, Committees, and Work Groups.  

The ideal candidate should possess a professional background in association management and development, is knowledgeable on a diverse range of topics and able to position NSGIC to maximize grants and its impact on the geospatial industry. They must exhibit good organizational skills and discipline to ensure that work is completed in a timely fashion.  

The Director must have excellent written and oral communication skills and have skills in working with desktop and online office productivity software  products, including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, graphics and document management. 

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate for the Director, Grants Administration, has a college degree or equivalent, successful experience in business, organization or association management or related field. Previous professional experience as a grant writer or in an equivalent role of an organization is required.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate recent previous experience in working with state and federal grants.  

 

An understanding of geospatial technology applications, outreach, education, project management and programmatic issues is preferred. NSGIC is flexible with regard to the candidate’s academic background and specific work  experience.  

Work Conditions 

This is a remote position.  The Director is expected to provide and maintain a professional and functional home office with high speed internet service.   They are expected to respond to phone and e-mail communications and be otherwise available during normal work hours, but must be flexible and willing to work odd hours as needed to support the organization.

 

The Director will be required to travel at various times during the year to a variety of destinations.  Foremost among those travel requirements will be the Midyear and Annual Conferences, which each last five to six days and include weekends.  Additional travel may be required on a case by case basis.  

There are no unusual environmental conditions related to this job.  The Director will be working  from their own office, traveling on public transportation and staying in commercial hotels. Compensation 

Initial compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s skills, experience and education and will be negotiated as part of the job offer. Long-term compensation will be tied to performance measures that demonstrate improvement in overall organizational development.  

Disclaimers 

The job duties may be changed to include new responsibilities and tasks, as the Executive Director deems necessary. The Executive Director may adjust compensation for the position commensurate with duties.
