Job Description:

ABA's Office of Strategic Engagement is seeking a VP to join its state legislation team. The VP will develop ABA’s state advocacy posture based on legislation happening at the state level. The VP is responsible for supporting ABA members and state bankers association lobbying activity including, developing talking points, advocacy materials, and partnerships with national state policy organizations.

The VP will identify national overlays of state-focused legislative matters and expand ABA state and municipal working groups to develop resources used in response to emerging policy issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Raise awareness among ABA membership of recent state law developments and trends and lead ABA’s response. This can include:
- Briefing state banker associations and member banks
- Drafting comment letters, talking points, or other advocacy materials
- Drafting or editing written communications material, including op-eds, tweets, articles, and advertisements
- Giving speeches; and,
- Developing and presenting other written and verbal communications.
Collaborate effectively with federal legislative affairs, regulatory policy, communications, and the Office of the Chief Economist to ensure seamless coordination between state and federal policy priorities.
Manage ABA working groups focused on state and local legislative issues.
Develop state banking law resources including comparative law charts.
Monitor, engage and influence the activities of national state policy organizations by informing policy debates, engaging working groups, and drafting comment letters.
Other duties as assigned by business need.

Requirements:

Juris Doctorate/Law degree and admission to a state bar is strongly preferred.
10+ years’ experience with banking law, legislative process, and/or legal research.
Strong communications skills and ability to build relationships with multiple stakeholders.
Ability to analyze state legislation and identify issues relevant to ABA members.
Ability to effectively communicate information via weekly conference calls, email updates, website postings, comment letters and in-person presentations.
