The Position Reports to: Senior Director of Membership and Professional Development 

Position Description and Goals 

The Membership Manager at IEDC plays a leading role in IEDC’s membership strategy and execution. This position is responsible for overseeing membership retention and recruitment to strengthen relationships with current members and identify ways to recruit and attract new members through campaigns and other strategies. The Membership Manager will be responsible for closely coordinating across the organization to ensure positive, timely and seamless member experiences. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record for successful membership recruitment and retention campaigns for national and/or international associations with a solution-oriented, open-minded, and collaborative approach to work. This position has one direct report, ensuring the quality of that team member’s work, while also providing training and mentorship. The Membership Manager reports to the Senior Director of Membership and Professional Development. 

Location 

This position is eligible to be located outside commuting distance of IEDC’s Washington, DC, office, and applicants from throughout the United States are encouraged to apply.

Areas of Responsibility 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

Planning and Budgeting 

  • Responsible for the achievement of membership mission, goals, and financial objectives.  
  • Ensure that evaluation systems are in place related to these goals and objectives and report progress to senior management and the board. 
  • Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for the membership program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence, and evaluate performance. 
  • Recommend short- and long-term organization goals and objectives to the Senior Director of Membership and Professional Development. 
  • Development of proactive membership campaigns and engagements in partnership with other team members, bringing in other departments into the planning process. 
  • Coordination of planning with other organizational departments to ensure transparency across the organization and engagement that allows for effective execution. 
  • Keep informed of developments in the fields of membership and not-for-profit management and using this information to help the organization operate with initiative and innovation. 
  • Identify new membership projects, programs, and activities that position the organization to continue to lead the world in the economic development field while generating revenue growth opportunities for the organization. 

Program/Service Management 

  • Recommend and develop new member programs and services.  
  • Oversee the membership application and renewal process. 
  • Publish weekly, monthly and annual reports on membership status.     
  • Develop reporting structures internally for the organization. 
  • In collaboration with other IEDC teams, develop, implement and monitor systems and procedures necessary for retention and recruitment campaigns. 
  • Provide essential administrative and analytical support for membership and member prospect interactions, projects and campaigns. 
  • Oversee outreach efforts to new, existing, or prospective members. 
  • Cultivate and steward key relationships with other associations and economic development organizations to ensure a steady pipeline of new member cultivation opportunities from a diverse set of partners.   
  • In collaboration with other IEDC teams, develop and manage processes for regularly identifying member needs.  
  • In collaboration with other IEDC teams, develop and manage process for member feedback on programs and services.  
  • Provide updates and progress reports as needed to CEO, senior team, across the organization and the Board of Directors. 
  • Plan and manage the Resource Center activities at IEDC events.  
  • Assist with all other event-related activities as required.  

Management 

  • Maintain an environment that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality team members, both paid and volunteer. 
  • Train, appraise, supervise, support, develop, promote, and guide qualified team members, both paid and volunteer. 
  • Provide clear direction, feedback and instruction to peers and junior team members. 
  • Act with intentionality in promoting the success of direct reports and colleagues throughout the organization. 
  • Proactively develop a plan for continued education and professional development for the membership team. 
  • Ensure team under your supervision is kept informed of organizational updates and demonstrate consistent open communication to promote collaboration and cohesion. 
  • Complete managerial and administrative tasks while following defined procedures and adhering to timelines and deadlines. 

Young Professionals Advisory Committee 

  • Operate as the staff liaison for the Young Professionals Advisory Committee 
  • Work with the committee leadership to schedule committee meetings and assist with meetings facilitation  
  • Keep meeting minutes and ensure timely communication   

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in membership association management, with demonstrated success, preferably in the not-for-profit or association sector.  
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; additional 5 years’ experience acceptable in lieu of education requirement. 
  • Experience hiring, training, developing, supervising, and appraising staff a plus. 
  • Experience with Airtable and iMIS a plus, but willingness to learn is a must. 
  • Ability to create, manage, and adhere to complex budgets.  
  • An excellent and active listener who can quickly gather, synthesize, and act on feedback from diverse sources. 
  • Willingness to explore professional development. 
  • Customer service experience a must, preferably in an association or membership development context. 
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask while maintaining careful attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision. 
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills are required. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills. 
  • Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, database access and electronic research.  
  • Some overnight, out of town travel is required.  
  • If not located within commuting distance of our Washington, DC, office, must be located within the United States, have reliable access to dedicated high-quality internet service, and willing to accommodate an Eastern U.S. schedule of operations. Occasional travel to the IEDC office may be required.
