The National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS), a Washington D.C.-based non-profit, non-partisan organization representing school districts across the United States, is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as its next Executive Director.
The NAFIS team is dedicated to educating Congress on the importance of the Impact Aid Program (Title VII of Public Law 114-95), a program vital to the ongoing success of schools that reside on federally impacted land. The Executive Director plays a vital role in advancing this mission by managing the day-to-day operations of the association, leading its strategic advocacy efforts, ensuring member success, and raising the awareness of Impact Aid.
We are looking for a dynamic individual with proven leadership experience, strong communication and management skills, a collaborative spirit, and a deep understanding of the political landscape. Our ideal candidate will possess social agility with a track record of successfully navigating complex environments, negotiating compromises among various stakeholder groups, and possess a degree of political savvy. This person will take a flexible approach to leading the team while incorporating both agile leadership techniques and using innovation and creativity to drive the organization.
Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:
Bachelor’s degree (required), and CAE preferred, but not required
Knowledge of the U.S. Congress and the policymaking, legislative process
Experience in budget development and implementation
Fundamental understanding of public-school finance, preferred
Familiarity with the Impact Aid Program (Title VII of P.L. 114-95) (preferred)
Experience working with a non-profit association (preferred)
Experience in managing a small team
Association management experience, required
Ability to manage groups with competing interests
An aptitude for developing and maintaining key relationships
Demonstrated success in implementing strategic initiatives
Registered lobbyist, preferred, but not required\
Travel multiple times a year for conferences and meetings is required

PLEASE NOTE: NAFIS is currently located in Washington, D.C. but is slated to move its headquarters office to Alexandria, VA in September 2026. This opportunity will require the executive director to be in the office a minimum of three days per week, which is the current NAFIS staff policy.
