The Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) is a leading international trade association representing 3,500 signatory contracting firms across the globe. SMACNA is looking for a Director of Government and Political Affairs for its Capitol Hill Office. The ideal candidate will have established senior-level relationships, key contacts and experience working with Senate and House offices, with special focus on tax, labor-management relations, energy efficiency, government contracting procurement, and workforce development issues. The candidate will also have experience assisting in developing and implementing strategies for government relations and advocacy, researching policy issues and engaging with government officials to advance organizational priorities.
The position requires:
- developing and disseminating information, including issue briefs, talking points, and other materials, to internal and external audiences;
- conducting independent research on legislative and regulatory issues pertinent to SMACNA and its contractors, to ensure Hill and SMACNA staff & members are well-informed about the latest developments and potential impacts of our initiatives;
- conducting member outreach; and
- fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders, House and Senate Members, and key staff. This includes both Government Affairs and PAC-related communications.
Excellent writing, editing and public speaking skills as well as experience with the legislative and policy process of Congress and key federal agencies.
The candidate should be comfortable assisting SMACNA Capitol Hill office (CHO) and Headquarters staff with event-planning for annual conference and convention events.
The position is hybrid remote and reports to the Capitol Hill office 3 days per week. A bachelor’s degree in political science, governmental affairs or related degree is required along with a minimum of 5 years’ senior-level experience working on Capitol Hill.
